Abstract

The objective of the study was to review several experimental reports to see the efffectiveness of garlic in the treatment of pyloric gastritis caused by Helycobacter pylori, which can even induce cancer. Recent studies identify the components that provide medicinal benefits, they are allicin, diallyl disulfide, diallyl trisulfide, 1- propenyl allyl thiosulfonate, allyl methyl thiosulfonate, etc. Eradication with antibiotics alone or together with a proton pump inhibitor is the main strategy to decrease the incidence of gastric cancer, although it can lead to resistance. In conclusion, although there are innumerable preclinical studies that have shown that garlic or its constituents are potentially anticancer agents; however, epidemiological studies are inconclusive on garlic's cure for cancer. Current evidence suggests that garlic has great potential to be developed as a pharmaceutical candidate for Helycobacter pylori eradication.
