Abstract

Objective: To characterize the accessions of the germplasm collection of caigua (Cyclanthera spp.) at the Agricultural Experiment Station of INIA in Huaral, Peru. Methodology: 15 quantitative descriptors and 45 qualitative descriptors were evaluated from a sample of three plants for each accession; then multivariate analysis was performed to group the information collected. Results: It was found that 5 of the 15 quantitative variables and 27 of the 45 qualitative variables presented a high discriminant behaviour. Results: It was found that 5 of the 15 quantitative variables and 27 of the 45 qualitative variables showed high discriminant behaviour. The principal component and cluster analyses showed that the accessions were divided into two large differentiated groups, in which 14 accessions belonging to the species C. brachybotrys and 32 accessions to C. pedata were identified. Conclusion: The variability found between and within groups showed the potential of these materials in plant breeding programs for the different traits evaluated, proposing 12 accessions of C. pedata as promising, due to their morphological characteristics, both vegetative and reproductive.
